CPIBy Daniel Foch

EXAMPLE: Reading CPI against the housing market

Example only. Shows the file format and the kind of housing take a CPI note should make. Not a published reading.

This file is an example of the post format. It is not a published take, and it does not report a real release. Replace it, or leave it, when a real note is ready.

A CPI note should say what moved, then what that means for housing. Headline CPI and the shelter component do not tell the same story. Shelter in the Canadian CPI mixes rent, mortgage interest cost, and homeowners' replacement cost, and those pieces can move in opposite directions. A hot headline can be energy or food. A hot shelter line can be mortgage interest while resale prices are flat, or rent while ownership costs cool.

Write the take in a few short paragraphs. Link the release itself in sourceUrl. If you have a chart, put an SVG or PNG in public/charts and set chart to that public path, for example /charts/2026-10-cpi.svg.
